M3

Searching

Marauder 3's search speed is unparalleled by any other tool.  This section describes how you can search for images using the two search tools:   Quick Search and Comprehensive Search.  The next section discusses more adavanced features of the Comprehensive Search.

Quick Search

The Quick Search window lets you look for files by names in the M3 database.

To use it:

  • Select the Database>Quick Search... menu item.
  • Enter filename you are looking for.
  • Press the Find button.
Quick Search will then open an Advanced Browser and display all files known by M3 that match the search string you provided.

When using Quick Search or other M3 tools which use filename wildcards, please rememeber that M3 uses a different, move advanced syntax.  This syntax includes the basic "?" and "*" as known by OS/2(!), Windows 95, and BeOS so for most cases you ca use them without worrying about about the differences.  For more information on the syntax of expressions, please read the expressions section

(!) Notice OS/2 users - Marauder 3 regards "?" as one and only one character.  This is different than the way some OS/2 system commands use "?".

Comprehensive Search

The Comprehensive Search window lets you seacrh Marauder 3's database or your computer's file system.  To use it:

  • Select Database>Comprehensive Search... menu item
  • Enter a filesystem path expression (eg. E:\IMAGES\*), a virtual path (eg. E:\NOWHERE\*), an assigned name path (eg. BARACUDA:\*), a device or media path (eg. ZIP:\* or ZIP_DSK1:\*), a M3 database path (eg. DB:\*) or a more complex search expression.
  • Enter a description string if searching M3's database. (optional step)
  • Select or clear desired attributes if searching M3's database. (optional step)
  • Press Perform button to perform the search.
  • If you wish to view the images in an Advanced Browser press the View button, otherwise perform more advanced functions.  (described in next section)
You can reuse the Comprehensive Search window as many times as you wish, modifing the selections you have made and pressing Perform button again.

Not displayed in the above two examples is upcoming version 1.2's F14 button.  By selecting the F14 option, you will be allowing M3's search engine to only consider the first 14 characters in an images name when attempting to match expressions.  This may result significant speed gains in some searches.  Please see the search speed section for details.
